Historically, the fruit of Tribulus terrestris Linn. (Zygophyllaceae) has been used in India and China as a constituent of rejuvenation tonics. It is also used in traditional Indian medicine in the therapy of a variety of health conditions affecting liver, kidney, and cardiovascular and immune systems. Oxidative stress has been implicated in some of these disease conditions. Therefore, we have investigated the antioxidant activity of the aqueous extract of Tribulus terrestris fruit (TTE) in spleen cells.
Why Do People Use Tribulus?
Tribulus is most often used for infertility, erectile dysfunction, and low libido. In the last decade, it has become popular to improve sports performance.
Tribulus has been marketed these conditions because research performed in Bulgaria and Russia indicates that tribulus increases levels of the hormones testosterone (by increasing luteinizing hormone), DHEA, and estrogen. The design of these research studies, however, has been questioned.
EFFECTIVENESS
Okay there’s no doubt about it. I definitely noticed an increase in my libido as a result of consuming one capsule morning and night. This was very apparent after supplementing for only several days.
But what about the anabolic effect (if any) of consuming Tribulus in conjunction with a resistance training regime? Well, this product contains 100 capsules (each 625mg) to be consumed 2 times per day. Do the maths and you’ll work out that it lasted me 50 days - more than enough time to notice any considerable changes. However at the end of the day, I found that this product had an
insignificant effect on my results in the gym. Sure I was making good gains - but no better than prior to supplementing with Tribulus.
Tribulus Terrestris Side Effects:
High doses of Tribulus terrestris may lead to overstimulation and insomnia. Always start with a portion of a capsuse if you are very sensitive to herbal supplements.
